WARTS (VERRUCA)

Warts are small, grainy skin growths that occur most often on fingers or hands. Warts are rough to the touch, common warts also often feature a pattern of tiny black dots. Common warts are caused by a virus and are transmitted by touch. Children and young adults are more likely to develop common warts, as are people who have weakened immune systems. Common warts usually disappear on their own. Wart is a skin growth caused by some types of the virus called the human papillomavirus (HPV). Most warts go away on their own within months or years.

Causative factors for Warts:

Common warts are caused by an infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). More than 100 types of HPV exist, but only a few cause warts on hands. Other types of HPV are more likely to cause warts on feet and other areas of the skin and mucous membranes. Most types of HPV cause relatively harmless conditions such as common warts, while others may cause serious disease such as cancer of the cervix.

Types of Warts:

1. Plantar warts: These type of warts usually appears as flesh-colored or light brown lumps that are flecked with small clotted blood vessels that appear as tiny black dots. Plantar warts appear on the soles of the feet.

2. Genital warts: Genital warts can appear in the pubic area, on the genitals, in or around the anus, and/or in the vagina. They look like small flesh-colored, pink, or red growths. The warts may look similar to the small parts of a cauliflower or they may be very tiny and difficult to see. They often appear in clusters of three or four, and may grow and spread rapidly. They usually are not painful, although they may cause mild pain, bleeding, and itching. HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted disease in North America and certain forms of the virus can cause cervical cancer.

3. Flat warts: This type of wart is more common in teens and children than in adults. Flat warts are smoother, flatter, and smaller than other warts and they generally occur on the face. Flat warts also can appear on the legs, especially among females.

Symptoms:

Warts come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. A wart may be a bump with a rough surface, or it may be flat and smooth. Tiny blood vessels grow into the core of the wart to supply it with blood. In both common and plantar warts, these blood vessels may look like dark dots in the wart's center.Warts are usually painless. But a wart that grows in a spot where you put pressure, such as on a finger or on the bottom of the foot, can be painful.

Common warts usually occur on your fingers or hands and may be:

  • Small, fleshy, grainy bumps
  • Flesh-colored, white, pink or tan
  • Rough to the touch
  • Sprinkled with black pinpoints, which are small, clotted blood vessels

How to diagnose Warts?

In most cases, doctor can diagnose a common wart with one or more of these tests:

  • Examining the wart
  • Scraping off the top layer of the wart to check for signs of dark, pinpoint dots, clotted blood vessels which are common with warts.
  • Removing a small section of the wart and sending it to a laboratory for analysis to rule out other types of skin growths.

How Homoeopathy helps to cure for Warts?

Homeopathic remedies for warts given below indicate the therapeutic affinity but this is not a complete and definite guide to the treatment of this condition. The symptoms listed against each homeopathic remedy may not be directly related to this disease because in homeopathy general symptoms and constitutional indications are also taken into account for selecting a remedy.

Commonly indicated Homeopathic medicines:

Dulcamara: Flat warts located on backs of hands and face and soft brownish to black seborrheic warts found on the back. Indicated in people with rheumatic complaints that are worse in cold, damp weather or humidity.

Ferrum picricum (Ferr-pic.): Small pointed warts appearing in large groups. Also useful in some cases of flat or plane warts with irregular borders that grow on the face, neck, wrists, hands and knees. Men may have prostatic enlargement.

Graphites: Especially in periungual warts or corn-like warts on palms or soles of feet that may be tinged with yellow. This is not just a homeopathic remedy for warts but covers many other skin complaints like eczema.

Nitricum acidum (Nit-ac.): This homeopathic remedy is indicated in treating large, fissured or gold-yellow warts that itch and sting or bleed upon washing. This remedy is also indicated for people who are anxious about health and worry about cancer. Often useful for warts that have a horny wall surrounding a central depression or the more common plantar wart.

Thuja occidentalis: The most common homeopathic remedy for various kinds of warts. If no other remedy is obviously indicated, consider Thuja. Particularly indicated in isolated, jagged warts that smell or bleed easily or mosaic warts on the sole of the foot.
