ABSCESS

An abscess is a tender mass generally surrounded by a coloured area from pink to deep red. Abscesses are often easy to feel by touching. Abscesses can show up any place on body. Abscess is painful and warm to touch. The most common sites are in armpits (axillae), areas around the anus and vagina(Bartholin gland abscess), the base of the spine (pilonidal abscess), around a tooth (dental abscess), and in groins.Inflammation around a hair follicle can also lead to the formation of an abscess, which is called a boil (furuncle). In general an abscess must open and drain in order for it to improve. Sometimes draining occurs on its own, but generally it must be opened by a doctor in a procedure called incision and drainage.

Causative factors for Abscess:
Abscesses are caused by obstruction of sebaceous glands or sweat glands, inflammation of hair follicles, or minor breaks and punctures of the skin. The middle of the abscess liquefies and contains dead cells, bacteria, and other debris. This area begins to grow, creating tension under the skin and further inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Pressure and inflammation cause the pain.

Symptoms:
The most common symptoms are pain, swelling, redness, pus formation, discharge, and fever. Also, depending on the site of an abscess, some symptoms may vary. If the infection is severe and uncontrolled, there is a possibility of its spread to other parts of the body. Severer infection may lead to a serious condition called septicemia.

How to diagnose an Abscess?
A diagnosis of an abscess may be delayed because some symptoms may initially be nonspecific or mild. These include swelling, redness, and tenderness to the area where the abscess is forming. Other symptoms, such as fever, chills, and severe pain to affected area may be initially be assumed to be related to various infectious diseases or inflammatory processes.
