  • Viral infections
  • Bacterial infections (such as gonorrhea or Chlamydia)
  • Irritants such as shampoos, dirt, smoke, and pool chlorine
  • Allergies, like dust, pollen, or a special type of allergy that affects some contact lens wearers
  • Other common causes include blepharitis, corneal abrasion, foreign body, subconjunctival hemorrhage, keratitis, iritis, glaucoma, chemical burn, and scleritis

Types of conjunctivitis

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis- Bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection caused by bacteria, such as staphylococci, streptococci or haemophilus
  • Viral conjunctivitis- Viral conjunctivitis is often associated with the common cold. This may be caused by a virus called ‘adenovirus’. This type of conjunctivitis can spread rapidly
  • Chlamydia conjunctivitis- This type of conjunctivitis is caused by an organism called Chlamydia trachomatis. This organism may also affect other parts of the body and can cause the sexually transmitted infection Chlamydia
  • Allergic conjunctivitis – Allergic conjunctivitis is common in people who have other signs of allergic disease, such as hay fever, asthma and eczema. The conjunctivitis is often caused by antigens like pollen, dust mites or cosmetics.

It Allergic rhinitis includes

  • Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis
  • Perennial allergic conjunctivitis
  • Contact dermatoconjunctivitis
  • Giant papillary conjunctivitis

Symptoms

  • Redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid
  • Swelling of the conjunctiva (the thin layer that lines the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid) and/or eyelids
  • Increased amount of tears
  • Thick yellow discharge that crusts over the eyelashes, especially after sleep
  • Green or white discharge from the eye
  • Burning eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Feeling like a foreign body is in the eye(s) or an urge to rub the eye(s)

How to diagnosis conjunctivitis?

Usually diagnose the condition based on examination of the eyes and the history of that illness. Sometimes, a swab has to be taken from the eye – especially if there is no improvement on standard treatment.

In some cases that are severe or do not respond to treatment, you may need to see an ophthalmologist.

Physical examination reveals peripheral injection of the bulbar Conjunctival vessels. In children, possible systemic symptoms include sore throat or fever, if the conjunctivitis is suspected of being of adenoviral origin.

Lymphocytes are predominant in stained smears of Conjunctival scrapings if conjunctivitis is caused by a virus. Polymorph nuclear cells predominate if conjunctivitis is due to bacteria; eosinophils, if it’s allergy related. Culture and sensitivity tests indentify the causative bacterial organisms and indicate appropriate antibiotic therapy in conventional medicine.
