Cirrhosis of Liver

It is a liver disease where there is irreversible damage to the liver cells causing thickening of the liver tissue which is called as fibrosis of the liver, this is caused due to excessive consumption of alcohol, recurrent hepatic diseases leads to damage to the liver cells.

Symptoms:

  • Low grade fever
  • Weakness, fatigue and weight loss
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort
  • In females causes menstrual irregularities
  • Abdominal distention due to ascites

Signs:

  • Jaundice
  • Ascites
  • Testicular atrophy
  • White nails
  • Parotid enlargement
  • Clubbing of nails
  • Diminished body hair

Types:

There are three types of cirrhosis

1. Micro Nodular Cirrhosis: there is formation of nodules where whole liver is involved; the size of the nodule is less than 3mm n diameter

2. Macro Nodular Cirrhosis: there is formation of nodules on surface of the liver; the size of the nodules is coarse, irregular in size measures to centimeters

3. Mixed Nodular Cirrhosis: there is formation of nodules which are small and large.

  • Frequent alcohol consumption
  • Hepatitis
  • Recurrent liver diseases

Complications:

  • Portal hypertension
  • Splenomegaly
  • Ascites
  • Hepato renal failure

Medications:

  • Multivitamin supplements
  • Avoiding of alcohol
  • Vaccination of hepatitis A and B
