Pleural Effusion

It is accumulation of fluid in the pleural space of the lungs, generally pleural space contains small amount of fluid which allows lungs for inspiration and expiration and lubricates the lung, if the fluid in between the pleural space exceeds 500ml then it is considered as pleural fusion.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Breathlessness, the person goes breathless in some cases depending upon the amount of accumulation of fluid
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry cough
  • Pain in the chest
  • Feeling of chest heaviness or tightness
  • Gets breathless when lie flat
  • Inability to exercise
  • Generally feeling unwell
  • Easily fatigue

Types:

It depends on the fluid which is accumulated in the pleural space

  1.  Transudate Fluid: The fluid in the pleural space contains much of plasma this is also called as hydrothorax
  2.  Exudates Fluid: the fluid contains much of proteins along with plasma.

Treatment:

  • Aspiration of the fluid can be done
  • Tube thoracostomy, in which tube is inserted to remove excessive fluid
  • Insertion of shunt to divert the fluid
